Enclosure

  • Hatchlings/Juveniles: 10–20 gallon enclosure

  • Adults: Minimum 40 gallon enclosure (larger is always better)

  • Secure lid required—corn snakes are expert escape artists

Provide multiple hiding spots on both the warm and cool sides of the enclosure to help your snake feel safe.

Temperature & Heating

  • Warm side: 85–88°F (29–31°C)

  • Cool side: 72–78°F (22–26°C)

  • Night drop: Optional, but avoid below 68°F (20°C)

Use an under-tank heater or heat mat regulated by a thermostat. Never use unregulated heat sources.

Lighting

Corn snakes do not require UVB lighting, but a normal day/night cycle (12 hours on / 12 hours off) is recommended. Optional low-level UVB may be provided for enrichment.

Humidity

  • Ideal range: 40–60%

  • Increase humidity slightly during shedding cycles

Provide a humidity hide or lightly mist if shedding issues occur.

Substrate

Safe substrate options include:

  • Aspen bedding

  • Cypress mulch

  • Coconut fiber

Avoid pine or cedar, as they are toxic to reptiles.

Feeding

Corn snakes eat appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents.

  • Hatchlings: Pinky mice every 5–7 days

  • Juveniles: Fuzzies or hoppers every 7–10 days

  • Adults: Adult mice every 10–14 days

Prey should be no wider than the thickest part of the snake’s body.

Water

Provide a clean, shallow water bowl large enough for the snake to soak in if desired. Replace water daily and disinfect the bowl regularly.

Handling

  • Handle gently and confidently

  • Avoid handling for 48 hours after feeding

  • Regular handling helps build trust and calm behavior

Corn snakes are generally docile and tolerate handling well.

Shedding

Healthy sheds should come off in one complete piece. If shedding problems occur, check humidity levels and provide a moist hide.

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Spot clean waste as needed

  • Replace substrate regularly

  • Full enclosure clean every 4–6 weeks

Always use reptile-safe cleaning products.

Lifespan

With proper care, corn snakes can live 15–20+ years, making them a long-term commitment.

Final Notes

Corn snakes are resilient, rewarding, and visually stunning reptiles. Consistent care, proper husbandry, and respect for the animal are the foundation of responsible ownership.
